Chiseled In Stone - The Newsletter - December 2007

December 14, 2007

Cocktail Chatter

OK so you won't be chatting about Refined Stone's newsletter at the next holiday party but we hope you find the latest news from the world of stone interesting reading.

October 4th-7th 2007 at VeronaFiere in Verona, Italy the 42nd edition of Marmomacc, the International Natural Stone & Technology fair, featured dozens of new stone materials and innovations from around the globe.

Marmomacc 2007 featured a project called the "Lightness of Stone". Designers created everyday moveable stone objects such as lamps using traditional stone fabricating tools. Another hot innovative design from the stone industry included "stone foil" which is a super thin stone based material that is ideal for non-flat surfaces created by the Grein Group. One such object was the stone motorcycle helmet. The Grein Group exhibited motorcycle helmets in 15 different types of granite.

A sampling of materials that will be making their way to U.S. markets in 2008:

From Lacroix et Fils Granit — Granite colors from North America, including earth tones such as Atlantic Black, Atlantic Blue and Atlantic Green. And lighter colors such as New Rainbow, Deer Brown and Autumn Harmony;

From Antolini Luigi — the Diamond Collection, which features Swarovski crystals combined with stones such as onyx and quartzite;

BMS Simonelli — granite slabs with the Venezian® finish (Venezian finished can be viewed in the Refined Stone showroom), which offers a flat surface with a textured feel; standard colors include Rialto (brown), Polo (light gold), San Marco (blue), Lido (black), Burano (light brown/tan) and Murano (green);

Caesarstone — announced that it will soon be offering three new colors in its Concetta collection (Refined Stone carries the Caesarstone line of quartzstone); Campolonghi — Tsoa Pearl, which has alternating waves of light and dark green, with blue mother-of-pearl accents.

THE HOME BODY'S BUDDY

Useful Tips for Around the House

Does your liquid hand soap end up dripping down the side of your dispenser and onto your vanity counter? Liquid soap left on your natural could seep into the pores of the stone leaving a dark shadow spot. If you find this happening thoroughly wash the area and rinse with what almost seems like too much water. In a day or two your stone will dry out and the shadow mark should be gone. Ask your fabricator for a 4x4 sample of your natural stone or use a square of tile left over from your tile work to keep under your bottle of liquid soap. Better yet use a fine milled bar soap for hand washing instead of liquid soap and avoid the issue altogether.

THE EXPERTS' OPINIONS

Inside Information from the professionals in the Trenches.

Realtors, interior designers, stone distributors, carpenters, etc., professionals that we work with everyday help to answer FAQ's from our clients. What effect will granite kitchen countertops will have on the sale of a home.

Diane Fisher, a realtor with Coldwell Banker's Longmeadow, MA office feels that granite countertops will have a very positive effect on the sale of a home. "The kitchen is one of the major factors a buyer will use in assessing the purchase of a home. When buyers walk into a kitchen they are looking for the granite. A fresh coat of paint on the walls (and cabinets if needed) and new granite countertops will make your kitchen look newly renovated. And the best part is that you will be able to recover the investment in the sale of the house. If you would like to talk in more detail contact Diane at diane.fisher@nemoves.com
